About PICT

PICT is a multipurpose terminal at Paradip Port in Odisha, India, operated by J M Baxi Ports & Logistics Ltd. It has an installed capacity of 5.0 million tonnes per annum.

PICT was incorporated on 14 February 2015 as a special-purpose vehicle (SPV) to develop and operate a multipurpose cargo and container berth at Paradip Port on a Build–Operate–Transfer (BOT) basis. The concession agreement between Paradip Port Trust (PPT) and PICT was signed on 7 March 2015 for a 30-year term. Commercial operations commenced in July 2018. J M Baxi Ports & Logistics Limited (JMBPL) owns 100% of PICT’s equity. Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A. (MSC) launched a regular feeder shuttle service connecting PICT with Colombo Port. Regional Container Lines (RCL) is expected to start a feeder service from Paradip to Port Klang. Maersk Project Logistics utilises PICT for large-scale industrial exports.

Key figures in detail

  • Throughput: As of FY 2023–24, Paradip Port Authority (PPA) reported 12,711 TEUs of EXIM container traffic handled across the port, signifying growth in containerised cargo, including traffic through PICTPL
  • Capacity utilisation: The installed container-handling capacity at PICT remains vastly underutilised

Facilities & infrastructure

  • 450 m berth with 16-17 m draft
  • Jetty / Open Area: 14,130 sq m
  • Total Terminal Area: 257,600 sq m
  • Back-up & Stacking Areas: 56,000 sq m
  • Container Stack Yard: 16,800 sq m
  • 96 Reefer plug points
  • Two full-length rail sidings of 732 m and 657 m
  • Hazardous Cargo Area: 140 sq m

Why shippers choose PICT

  • Deep draft and long berth
  • Indian Railways and the Paradip Port Authority have signed an Engine-On-Load (EOL) scheme, under which locomotives remain attached to rakes during loading and unloading, thereby improving freight train efficiency
  • A direct rail siding at the terminal supports the loading and unloading of rail-borne cargo
  • Paradip Port Authority (PPA) has used aggressive pricing and incentives to attract container traffic
  • PICT is well placed geographically to serve several major industrial belts

Hinterland connectivity

Rail & road

National Highway 5A (NH-5A) is a 4-lane road linking Paradip to Chandikhole and connecting to NH-16. NH-5A and NH-16 provide efficient trucking routes for container traffic to Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. PICT’s connections to ICDs are facilitated by an extensive rail network, primarily operated by CONCOR and the East Coast Railway. ICDs and logistics parks connected to PICT include ICDs at Jharsuguda (CONCOR MMLP), Kalinganagar (Apeejay Logistics Park), Balasore, Jajpur, Tughlakabad, and Birgunj (Nepal). J M Baxi is the most active private train operator at the terminal. Adani Logistics Limited’s rail links PICT to its Multi-Modal Logistics Parks (MMLPs) across North and Central India. PICT’s berth features direct rail sidings, enabling containers and clean cargo to be loaded and unloaded directly onto and from rail rakes, thereby enhancing last-mile connectivity. The rail link via Cuttack connects Paradip to the national rail grid, enabling the movement of rakes to major industrial clusters and inland destinations across India. The Paradip–Haridaspur rail link, commissioned in 2020, connects to the Jharsuguda, Korba, and Kalinganagar industrial belts.

Throughput FY22–FY25
