India is set to transform passenger travel with seven new high-speed rail corridors, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced while presenting the Union Budget 2026-27 on Sunday.

The corridors aim to provide faster, environmentally sustainable travel, connecting major economic, cultural, and industrial centres across the country.

The proposed high-speed rail routes are:

  • Mumbai–Pune
  • Pune–Hyderabad
  • Hyderabad–Bengaluru
  • Hyderabad–Chennai
  • Chennai–Bengaluru
  • Delhi–Varanasi
  • Varanasi–Siliguri

“These corridors will connect India’s financial hubs, technology centres, manufacturing clusters, and emerging cities through faster, cleaner mobility,” Sitharaman said, highlighting the government’s focus on environmentally sustainable passenger transport.

INFRASTRUCTURE PUSH BEYOND RAILS

Alongside passenger rail upgrades, the Budget outlined major plans for freight and logistics.

Sitharaman announced a new dedicated East–West freight corridor connecting Dankuni in the east with Surat in the west. She also proposed the operationalisation of 22 new national waterways over the next five years to promote multimodal transport and reduce logistics costs.

“These initiatives will strengthen freight movement and support sustainable cargo transportation,” she said.

The government also plans to accelerate asset monetisation through REITs and develop new freight corridors to improve efficiency in goods movement.

In addition, the Budget proposes eco-tourism and nature-based travel initiatives, including sustainable trekking trails in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, and the Araku and Pudigai Valleys.

Wildlife-focused trails will also be developed, such as turtle-watching routes in Odisha, Karnataka, and Kerala, and bird-watching paths around Pulicat Lake.

PART OF A BIGGER VISION

Sitharaman said the Budget is guided by “three kartavyas,” aiming to accelerate economic growth, build human capacity, and ensure inclusive development. As part of this vision, six targeted interventions will support manufacturing, rejuvenate legacy industries, promote MSMEs, expand infrastructure, strengthen economic stability, and develop city economic regions.

“With faster trains, cleaner freight corridors, and sustainable tourism initiatives, India is setting the stage for a greener, more connected future,” the Finance Minister said.
