September 3, 2020: The government has decided to purchase 3,490,200 Mmbtu liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the spot market for the first time in the country with a cost of around Tk 1.33 billion.

The Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP) approved a proposal in this regard at its meeting on Wednesday with Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal in the chair. Nine other proposals were also approved during the meeting, reports BSS.

Briefing reporters virtually after the meeting, the finance minister described the decision to procure LNG from the spot market as a ‘very smart move’ as the government will be able to save Tk 300 million through the initiative.

Kamal also opined that this decision has opened up a new window in the energy sector as the government would now be able to procure LNG at a competitive price.

The finance minister said around Tk 17.95 billion will be required for these 10 approved proposals.

Out of the total Tk 17.95 billion, around Tk 6.31 billion will come from the Government of Bangladesh while the rest of around Tk 11.64 billion from the local banking sources.
