Summary

Container Corporation of India has launched a containerised rail freight service between Khemli near Udaipur in Rajasthan and ICD Whitefield in Bengaluru, in partnership with JK Cement. The service will move cement from JK Cement’s newly commissioned plant near Khemli to markets in southern India, offering a long-haul alternative to road transport.

Article

Udaipur: Container Corporation of India Limited (CONCOR) has launched a Udaipur-Bengaluru cement rail service, linking its terminal at Khemli (CMCK) near Udaipur with the Inland Container Depot at Whitefield (ICDW) in Bengaluru.

The service has been introduced in partnership with JK Cement Ltd to move cement from the company’s newly commissioned plant near Khemli to consumption markets in Karnataka and the wider south.

What does the service offer?

The direct rail link is designed to give JK Cement a reliable, cost-effective, and lower-emission option for long-distance cement movement, shifting volumes from conventional road transport to containerized rail.

CONCOR says rail can reduce road congestion, improve fuel efficiency and cut transport-related carbon emissions, particularly over long distances. Moving cement in containers also allows more organized cargo handling, better shipment planning and closer integration between the production plant, inland container depots and destination markets.

Why connect Rajasthan and Karnataka?

Rajasthan is a major cement-producing region, while Karnataka and other southern states are fast-growing markets for construction, housing and infrastructure. The new service gives JK Cement an additional route to supply these markets and is expected to improve logistics coordination for the company.

How does it fit CONCOR’s strategy?

The launch extends CONCOR’s domestic container network and builds on its partnership with JK Cement to develop logistics solutions tailored to the cement industry. CONCOR uses its rail network and inland container depots to connect industrial production centres with major consumption markets.

The service also supports India’s broader push to raise the share of rail in freight transport, improve logistics efficiency and reduce the environmental footprint of cargo movement.

Why does it matter for logistics?

Cement is a high-volume, low-value commodity, so transport costs weigh heavily on its delivered price. Over long distances such as Rajasthan to Bengaluru, rail can offer meaningful savings over trucking while easing highway congestion.

Moving cement in containers rather than conventional wagons also allows more flexible door-delivery through inland container depots, opening the door for more cement makers to tap distant markets by rail. If volumes build, similar dedicated streams could follow on other producer-to-market corridors.

FAQs

Which locations does the new CONCOR service connect?

It connects CONCOR’s Khemli terminal (CMCK) near Udaipur, Rajasthan, with ICD Whitefield (ICDW) in Bengaluru, Karnataka.

Who is CONCOR’s partner on the service?

JK Cement Ltd, which will use the service to move cement from its newly commissioned plant near Khemli.

What cargo will the service carry?

Cement bound for markets in Karnataka and other parts of southern India.

Why use containerised rail for cement?

It offers lower long-haul costs, less road congestion, better fuel efficiency and lower emissions, along with more organised handling.

How does the service support national logistics goals?

It supports India’s push to shift more long-distance freight from road to rail and improve logistics efficiency.
