Both maritime hubs Singapore Port and Port Klang of Malaysia are located on the Straits of Malacca, a major ocean route linking Europe and the Middle East to East Asia. About 20 container ships are waiting for their turn near the Port Klang. Slots at Tanjong Pelepas, another major Malaysian port appear to be completely occupied. The congestion may last beyond August and freight rates will continue to soar due to this congestion induced tonnage shortage.
