The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with the World Maritime University (WMU) in Malmö, Sweden, to establish the C.P. Srivastava Chair at the university.

The agreement was signed as part of efforts to strengthen cooperation between India and WMU in maritime research, education and capacity building.

Chair to honour former IMO Secretary-General

The Chair has been named after Dr C.P. Srivastava, who served as the longest-serving Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Srivastava played a key role in the establishment of WMU as well as the International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI).

Focus on maritime research and capacity building

The C.P. Srivastava Chair will focus on maritime research, education and capacity building across several areas, including:

  • Maritime governance
  • Maritime safety
  • Maritime law
  • Sustainable shipping
  • Ocean governance
  • Environmental sustainability
  • Technological innovation

The initiative is intended to provide a platform for research and knowledge development on issues shaping the global maritime sector.

Officials attend signing

The MoA was signed in the presence of Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, WMU President Prof. Maximo Q. Mejia Jr. and MoPSW Secretary Vijay Kumar.

Senior officials from MoPSW, the Directorate General of Shipping, the Indian Maritime University, the Indian Ports Association and WMU also attended the event.

The establishment of the Chair is expected to deepen institutional cooperation between India and WMU while supporting India’s engagement in global maritime governance and efforts towards a safe, sustainable and rules-based maritime sector.
