Summary

DHL plans to set up its first dedicated semiconductor warehouse in India at Dholera, Gujarat, joining Japan’s NX Group in positioning for logistics contracts tied to the country’s emerging chip manufacturing base. The move reflects growing competition among global logistics operators to serve fabs, assembly plants and their suppliers as India builds its semiconductor supply chain.

Article

Dholera: Global logistics major DHL has entered India’s semiconductor logistics market with plans to set up its first dedicated semiconductor warehouse in Dholera, Gujarat, according to a Mint report. The move puts DHL alongside Japan’s NX Group in a growing contest to serve India’s chip manufacturing ecosystem.

As India’s first fabs and assembly units move towards production, international freight and supply chain operators are positioning themselves to win high-value logistics and infrastructure contracts.

Why is Dholera the focus?

Dholera is home to India’s first front-end semiconductor fab, being built by Tata Electronics with Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) inside the Dholera Special Investment Region. The project is backed by an investment of about ₹91,000 crore and targets chips from 110nm to 28nm.

Nearby, Sanand has become a cluster for assembly, testing and packaging. It hosts Micron’s ATMP plant, Kaynes Semicon’s OSAT unit and a CG Power-Renesas-Stars Microelectronics joint venture.

What is NX Group doing?

NX Group, formerly Nippon Express, has moved early. It signed an MoU with the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) at SEMICON India 2026, held in New Delhi from September 17 to 19, to work on logistics and supply chain solutions for the sector.

The Japanese group plans to open a dedicated semiconductor logistics centre in the Dholera area in 2027 and aims to raise its India sales to ¥60 billion by fiscal 2028. It currently runs 103 locations and 60 warehouses across 39 cities in India.

NX has also signed an MoU with Japan’s Nagase to build a supply chain for front-end semiconductor manufacturing materials in Dholera. The partnership focuses on dangerous goods management, just-in-time delivery and proximity-based supply networks.

What does semiconductor logistics involve?

Chip supply chains demand far more than conventional warehousing. Fabs depend on a steady flow of specialty chemicals, gases, wafers and precision equipment, much of it hazardous or highly sensitive to vibration, temperature, humidity and contamination. Finished chips and wafers are high-value, time-critical cargo that often move by air.

Providers must offer cleanroom-grade storage, temperature-controlled handling, secure bonded inventory, dangerous goods expertise and tightly integrated just-in-time delivery. Such capabilities are scarce in India today, creating an opening for global players with experience in established chip hubs in Asia, Europe and the US.

Why does it matter for Indian logistics?

DHL’s entry signals that global logistics majors see India’s semiconductor programme moving from announcements to operations. Competition between DHL, NX and others should speed up the creation of specialised facilities near Dholera and Sanand, raising the bar for handling standards across India’s logistics sector.

For ports and airports in Gujarat, rising semiconductor activity could bring demand for specialised import handling of chemicals and equipment, along with export flows of finished chips and modules. Early movers that lock in relationships with fabs and their suppliers are likely to gain a lasting advantage as India’s chip ecosystem scales up.

FAQs

What has DHL announced in India?

DHL plans to set up its first dedicated semiconductor warehouse in Dholera, Gujarat.

Why are logistics firms focusing on Dholera?

Dholera hosts India’s first semiconductor fab, being built by Tata Electronics with PSMC, with Sanand’s assembly and testing cluster nearby.

What are NX Group’s plans?

NX Group plans a semiconductor logistics centre at Dholera in 2027 and has signed MoUs with the India Semiconductor Mission and Nagase.

What makes semiconductor logistics different?

It requires cleanroom-grade storage, temperature and humidity control, dangerous goods handling and just-in-time delivery for sensitive, high-value cargo.

Why does DHL’s entry matter?

It signals that global logistics majors see India’s chip programme moving into operations, increasing competition and investment in specialised facilities.
