Indian Railways loaded 141.3 million tonnes of freight during July 2026, registering a 9 percent growth over the 129.7 million tonnes loaded in July 2025, as the national carrier posted healthy gains across freight, passenger and revenue segments.

Which commodities drove the freight loading growth?

Iron ore loading grew 22.2 percent year on year, while coal and food grains each rose 11.5 percent, fertilizers increased 12 percent, and balance of other goods grew 12.1 percent, reflecting sustained demand from infrastructure, manufacturing and agricultural sectors. With coal demand rising at thermal power plants, Indian Railways stepped up domestic coal supply to power plants by 20 percent compared to the same month last year.

How did freight revenue perform in July 2026?

The increase in freight movement generated incremental freight revenue of Rs 1,137 crore over July 2025, marking an 8 percent growth. Among zonal railways, East Central Railway and Eastern Railway each recorded 33 percent growth in freight revenue, followed by West Central Railway at 23 percent and South Eastern Railway at 10.33 percent.

How did passenger traffic trend during the month?

Indian Railways carried 63.35 crore passengers in July 2026, up from 62.19 crore in the corresponding month last year, with growth recorded across both suburban and non-suburban segments, reflecting continued preference for rail travel nationwide.

What does this mean for Indian Railways’ operational trajectory?

The July 2026 performance underscores Indian Railways’ pivotal role in supporting economic growth, strengthening logistics efficiency and ensuring energy security through higher coal and commodity movement, while reinforcing its commitment to capacity augmentation and customer-centric service delivery across freight and passenger operations.
