India's Exports to China Surge 52%

India’s exports to China surged 52.35 percent year-on-year in August, significantly outpacing the 17.07 percent growth recorded in imports from China, according to the latest Indian government data, underscoring resilient and expanding trade links between the two major Asian economies.

How much did India-China merchandise trade grow in August?

India’s merchandise exports to China jumped to USD 1.9 billion in August, while imports from China rose to USD 8.4 billion, according to Business Standard. The strong momentum was not confined to a single month, with exports to China climbing 38.71 percent to USD 9.64 billion during the April-August period of India’s 2026-27 fiscal year, while imports increased 27.01 percent to USD 65.5 billion over the same period.

How significant was China as a destination for India’s export growth?

China was among the five export destinations that contributed the largest increases in value to India’s exports in August, alongside the United States, Singapore, Spain and Tanzania, according to the Indian government release, highlighting China’s growing importance within India’s broader export mix during the month.

What does China’s own trade data show about the relationship?

The positive trend was mirrored in China’s official trade figures. According to data released by China’s General Administration of Customs on September 8, China’s total foreign trade with India rose 22.6 percent year-on-year in the first eight months of 2026, with imports from India up 20.1 percent and exports to India increasing 41.3 percent.

What is driving renewed momentum in bilateral trade ties?

The strong growth in trade comes as China and India have stepped up efforts to strengthen economic and business engagement while working to address each other’s trade and economic concerns. Commerce officials from both countries have recently held discussions on bilateral trade and economic cooperation, with China consistently expressing willingness to work with India to expand mutually beneficial economic and trade cooperation, address trade concerns in a balanced manner, and deliver more benefits to businesses and people in both countries.

What does this mean for India-China trade and logistics flows?

The sharp rise in bilateral trade volumes, particularly the acceleration in India’s exports to China, points to strengthening two-way cargo movement between the two economies, with implications for shipping capacity, port throughput and logistics planning across key India-China trade corridors as both governments continue efforts to stabilise and expand their broader economic relationship.
