It has been reported that the number of imports shipped via DPD program through JNPT jumped 19 percent year-over-year from April 2016 through January this year. The program is seen as critical to lowering logistics costs by cutting container dwell times and increasing port productivity. 483 new shippers joined the program in January, bringing the total number of shippers in the Direct Port Delivery scheme to 543.

By volume, direct port deliveries in the April-to-January period totalled 67,098 twenty-foot-equivalent units, a jump of 19 percent year-over-year, statistics show. To push the scheme, uniform handling rates and establishment of a common pool of trucks for deployment on six select hinterland routes are in full progress. The Shipping Ministry also directed Container Corporation of India and shipping lines to assess the cost competitiveness of rail transport under the scheme.
Officials also suggested lines to provide round-the-clock services to facilitate speedy clearance of direct port delivery cargo, and JNPT Customs Authorities previously told container terminals to keep gates open 24/7.
