MOL Merges Six Ship Management Companies to Strengthen Safety Across 200+ Vessels

MOL Merges Six Ship Management Companies

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has completed the integration of six of its group ship management companies into a single entity, MOL Global Ship Management Pte. Ltd. (MOLGSM), consolidating oversight of more than 200 vessels across the group under one unified safety framework.

Why is MOL consolidating its ship management structure?

The six companies being folded into MOLGSM were previously organised by vessel type, spanning LNG carriers, tankers, and general ship management operations across Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong, India, London, and the UK. By bringing them under a single management structure, MOL aims to accelerate the rollout of safety measures across all vessel types, build a unified safety culture, and enable faster knowledge sharing across what had been a fragmented operational footprint.

What changes for MOL’s safety and data systems?

Centralisation is a core piece of the shift. Safety and quality data that were previously scattered across multiple locations will now be consolidated on a group-wide basis, giving MOLGSM sharper visibility into risk patterns and specialist capabilities across the fleet. The company said this is intended to help it respond more effectively to a business environment shaped by rising geopolitical risk and tightening environmental regulation.

How does technology factor into the new structure?

MOLGSM will work to standardise and optimise operations using AI and data analytics, aiming for faster, more informed decision-making. The company flagged this as particularly important for managing the safe rollout of emerging vessel technologies, including alternative-fuel ships, as the fleet transitions toward lower-emission propulsion.

What are the six companies involved?

The consolidated entities are MOL LNG Ship Management (Singapore, Hong Kong, India), MOL Ship Management (Singapore), MOL Tankship Management (Singapore, London), MOL LNG Transport (Japan), MOL Ship Management Co. (Japan), and MOL LNG Transport (Europe) (UK).

How does this fit into MOL’s broader safety strategy?

The restructuring sits under the MOL Group’s “Leading in Safety” push, part of its Safety Vision framework, BLUE ACTION 2035 Phase 2. The move signals a broader trend among major ship operators toward centralised safety governance as fleets diversify across vessel types and fuel technologies, making unified data and standardised protocols increasingly important for managing risk at scale.
