The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has launched a six-month Structured Onboard Training Programme for General Purpose Rating and Certificate Course in Maritime Catering trainees, aimed at addressing a longstanding gap faced by pre-sea trained youth awaiting mandatory onboard training.

Where is the training programme being conducted?

The programme is being run onboard MV Swaraj Dweep, a passenger vessel owned by the Andaman and Nicobar Administration and managed by The Shipping Corporation of India. The initiative commenced on July 15, 2026, marking a structured effort to place eligible trainees on active sea duty.

Who is implementing the programme and how is it funded?

The Shipping Corporation of India is implementing the programme in collaboration with the Directorate General of Maritime Administration, under the guidance of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. Financial support is being provided by the Maritime Training Trust, with SCI responsible for planning, execution, administration and monitoring to ensure effective delivery.

Why does this programme matter for Indian seafarers?

The initiative addresses a critical gap between pre-sea training and employment for General Purpose Rating and Certificate Course in Maritime Catering trainees, who often face delays securing mandatory onboard training required to complete their certification. By providing structured sea time, the Ministry aims to significantly improve the employability of aspiring Indian seafarers entering the shipping industry.

How does this align with India’s maritime workforce goals?

The programme is designed to strengthen India’s pool of skilled maritime professionals and expand employment opportunities across both domestic and global shipping sectors. It supports the objectives of Maritime India Vision 2030, reflecting the Ministry’s continued focus on building a sustainable, future-ready and globally competitive maritime workforce in partnership with industry stakeholders.
