Paradip Port, one of India’s leading major ports, is taking a proactive approach to safety by hosting a series of workshops focused on the safe handling of hazardous chemicals. The latest workshop, held on December 20th, 2024, brought together experts, government officials, and port workers to discuss best practices and strengthen safety protocols.

A collaborative effort for enhanced safety

The workshop, the fourth in a nationwide series organized by the Directorate General Factory Advice Service and Labour Institutes (DGFASLI), highlights Paradip Port’s commitment to setting the highest safety standards. It’s a collaborative effort involving the Ministry of Labour and Employment, DGFASLI, and academic institutions like IIT Kharagpur.

Key takeaways from the workshop:

  • Expert Insights: The workshop featured sessions led by experts in the field, covering topics ranging from national and international safety regulations to practical skills training for dockworkers.
  • Focus on Hazardous Chemicals: Given the nature of cargo handled at ports, a significant focus was placed on the safe handling, storage, and transportation of hazardous chemicals.
  • Skill Development: The workshop emphasized the importance of continuous learning and skill development for dockworkers and supervisors to ensure they are equipped to handle hazardous materials safely.
  • Collaboration is Key: The presence of speakers from both industry and academia highlighted the importance of collaboration between different stakeholders to enhance safety measures.

Paradip Port Authority has consistently prioritized safety in its operations. The port’s Chairman, P. L. Harandah, emphasized this commitment in his address, highlighting the port’s achievements in balancing operational efficiency with a strong safety culture.

This workshop is not just a one-off event but part of a larger movement to improve dock safety across India. By sharing knowledge, best practices, and fostering collaboration, Paradip Port is setting an example for other ports to follow.

By prioritizing safety, Paradip Port Authority is not only protecting its workforce but also contributing to the sustainable growth and development of India’s maritime sector. This commitment to safety sends a strong message that India is serious about maintaining high standards in its port operations, ensuring the well-being of its workers and the secure handling of goods, including hazardous materials.
