The South Container Yard (SCY)
About SCY
SCY is a container yard at Chittagong Port, Bangladesh, owned by the Chittagong Port Authority and operated by Red Sea Gateway Terminal International. It holds 7,000–9,000 TEUs at a time and handled 154,564 TEUs.
SCY is a strategic storage and logistics hub within the Chittagong Port complex. SCY is owned by the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) and is operated by Red Sea Gateway Terminal International (RSGTI). As of 2026, it has transitioned from a general support yard to a high-tech facility, largely thanks to its recent integration with the Patenga Container Terminal (PCT) operations.
It is situated on the right bank of the Karnaphuli River in the Patenga area of Chattogram, specifically near the Chattogram Dry Dock and the Sadarghat region at the southern end of the port’s main protected area.
The yard serves as the primary “backup engine” for the General Cargo Berths (GCB) and the Patenga Container Terminal (PCT). It is designed to handle overflow from the main jetties, ensuring ships can unload without having to wait for yard space. It exclusively accommodates containerised cargo (FCL and empty boxes). It is a major hub for the staging of Ready-Made Garment (RMG) exports.
Following a massive upgrade completed in late 2025, the SCY covers 15.54 acres. It contributes significantly to the port’s total internal capacity of 59,000 TEUs. SCY facilitates a portion of the port’s record 3.41 million TEUs (2025 data). It is estimated to “touch” or process roughly 450,000 TEUs annually via transfer.
While the area has been used for port activities for decades, the modern SCY was officially designated and developed as a specialised container yard in the early 2010s. It underwent a massive modernisation and expansion project in 2024–2025.
Key figures in detail
- Dwell time of containers: 4 to 7 days
Equipment
- 4 new hybrid Rubber-Tyred Gantry (RTG) cranes, permanently stationed at SCY in October 2025, which can lift 41 tonnes and use battery-hybrid systems to reduce emissions
- A fleet of Reach Stackers (45-ton), Terminal Tractors, and Forklifts shared with the PCT/GCB pool
- Dedicated container scanner
Facilities & infrastructure
- Every piece of equipment in SCY is equipped with GPS and IoT sensors, allowing the CTMS to track the precise movement of every container “live” on a 3D digital map
- As of January 2026, Chittagong Port officially inaugurated a dedicated 5G network specifically to support yard operations
- The Hybrid RTG cranes and Straddle Carriers in SCY transmit real-time telemetry data to the central control room without delay
- The Core Terminal Operating System (CTMS) manages the entire lifecycle of a container within SCY
- It coordinates with the adjacent Patenga Container Terminal (PCT) for loading sequences
- Yard planning assigns exact “Slot IDs” to containers based on weight and destination
Why shippers choose SCY
- Container handling speed is approximately 47 moves per hour, nearly 75% faster than the average at other Chittagong terminals
- The first yard in the port to be equipped with a significant fleet of Hybrid RTGs, making it the “greenest” storage block in the complex
- Its location makes it the only yard that can seamlessly switch between supporting the traditional GCB (general cargo) and the modern PCT (international operator-led) terminals
