About KPD

KPD is a dock in West Bengal, India, operated by Century Ports Ltd. It has an installed capacity of 0.165 million TEUs and handled 0.06 – 0.08 million TEUs in FY25.

As of January 2026, the Kidderpore Dock (KPD) has entered a new era of modernisation. Traditionally known for handling break-bulk cargo, KPD has recently pivoted towards high-efficiency container operations with the commissioning of its first Public-Private Partnership (PPP) terminal with Century Ports Limited (a subsidiary of Century Plyboards India Ltd). It is located in Kidderpore, Kolkata, on the River Hooghly. KPD specialises in short-sea and riverine feeder operations. While the Netaji Subhas Dock (NSD) is the larger container terminal in the Kolkata Dock System (KDS), the recent commissioning of the KPD has integrated the facilities to create a high-efficiency multimodal hub. KPD acts as a vital link in India’s “SagarMala” vision by shifting cargo from congested road and rail networks to more economical water routes. It serves as a primary feeder node for larger transhipment hubs. Containers from KPD are frequently shipped via coastal routes to the Haldia Dock Complex (HDC), Visakhapatnam (VCTPL), and Chennai, where they connect to global mother vessels. The terminal primarily serves EXIM trade for Nepal, Bhutan, and the Northeastern states. It also serves as a vital link for the India-Bangladesh coastal trade route and National Waterway 1 (NW-1). A significant portion of KPD’s coastal throughput consists of containerised agricultural products (such as rice and pulses) bound for Southern Indian ports. Containers are moved on coastal-class barges via National Waterway 1, serving the hinterlands of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

Equipment

  • High-efficiency cranes for flexible ship-to-shore handling
  • Dedicated units for inland waterway and barge-to-shore movement
  • Reach stackers, internal terminal vehicles (ITVs), and advanced forklifts
  • High-speed container scanning for customs compliance

Facilities & infrastructure

  • Modernised berths at KPD-I (West) with heavy-load-bearing surfaces
  • Dedicated plug-in stations for perishable cargo (shrimp and processed food)
  • Significant on-dock and off-dock storage space, including bonded warehouses
  • Tidal-dependent riverine draft of approximately 7.5 to 8.5 metres
  • Powered by an Advanced Terminal Operating System (TOS) for real-time tracking, automated gate management, and paperless documentation

Why shippers choose KPD

  • The first successful private container terminal within the historic Kolkata Dock System.
  • Exceptional integration of sea, rail, road, and inland waterways (NW-1).
  • Located at the heart of Kolkata’s industrial and consumption hub, minimising “last-mile” delivery costs.
  • Transformation of heritage infrastructure into a future-ready terminal, backed by ₹190 crore in private investment.

Hinterland connectivity

Rail & road

Integrated with the KDS (Kolkata Dock System) Railway. CONCOR and private train operators provide daily rakes for Nepal-bound cargo and for distribution across North-East India. Strategically located 12 km from NH-16 (formerly NH-6) and NH-19 (formerly NH-2), with direct access to the Vidyasagar Setu (Second Hooghly Bridge).

CFS & warehousing

As of January 2026, the Kidderpore Dock (KPD), under the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK), is primarily serviced by a cluster of 9 specialised Container Freight Stations. All nine CFSs are fully EDI-enabled (Electronic Data Interchange), ensuring that cargo cleared at the CFS is instantly updated in the terminal’s Zodiac Terminal Operating System and the ICEGATE portal. Most of these CFSs are situated along Hide Road and Taratala Road, providing them with direct, congestion-free access to NH-117 and the wider national highway network (NH-16 and NH-19).
