Sri Lanka and India near finalisation of $61 million Kankesanthurai port development deal

Sri Lanka and India are edging closer to sealing a landmark agreement worth $61 million for the development of Kankesanthurai port in the country’s Northern Province, in what would mark a significant step forward in bilateral economic cooperation between the two neighbouring nations.

The Kankesanthurai port, located near Jaffna on Sri Lanka’s northern coast, holds considerable strategic and commercial value given its proximity to the Indian coastline. Reviving and upgrading the facility is widely seen as a priority for boosting trade, connectivity and economic activity in the historically underserved Northern Province.

The port was once a key hub for passenger and cargo traffic between Sri Lanka and India but fell into disuse during the decades of civil conflict that ravaged the region. Its rehabilitation has long been viewed as essential to the post-war development of the north.

The proposed deal underscores India’s expanding role as a major infrastructure partner for Sri Lanka, particularly at a time when Colombo is actively seeking foreign investment to stabilise its economy following the severe financial crisis of recent years. India has increasingly positioned itself as a key development ally for Sri Lanka, with involvement spanning energy, transport and connectivity projects across the island. The Kankesanthurai port agreement would add a significant maritime dimension to that growing partnership.

Analysts have noted that a fully developed Kankesanthurai port could serve multiple purposes, including facilitating increased trade flows between northern Sri Lanka and southern India, boosting tourism and passenger ferry services across the Palk Strait, creating employment opportunities for communities in the Northern Province, and strengthening Sri Lanka’s overall port infrastructure network.

While an official signing has yet to be confirmed, reports indicate that discussions between Colombo and New Delhi have progressed to an advanced stage, with both governments keen to bring the agreement to a close in the near term. Sri Lankan authorities have not yet issued a formal public statement confirming the precise timeline for the deal’s finalisation, but the strong diplomatic momentum between the two countries suggests an announcement could follow in the coming weeks.
