The Central Government has appointed Mr. Sunil Mukundan as the Managing Director of India Ports Global, the entity tasked with developing and running Chabahar Port in Iran. India Ports Global has been functioning without a full time MD since September 2020. The Appointment Committee of Cabinet (ACC) is headed by PM Modi has appointed Mr. Mukundan for a period of five years. He has been operational in the ports sector for a period of 38 years and was recently the terminal head of oil refinery at Ruwais owned by Abu Dhabi National Oil Company.

Located in the Sistan-Baluchistan province of Iran’s South-eastern coast (outside Persian Gulf), Chabahar Port gives India a sea-land access route into Afghanistan and Central Asia through Iran’s eastern borders. The project is considered a strategic venture for the development of regional maritime transit traffic into Afghanistan and Central Asia.
