Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata, is embarking on a major expansion plan to enhance its cargo handling capacity. Key initiatives include:

  • Haldia Dock Complex Upgradation:
    • Increase cargo handling capacity from 50 MMT to 75 MMT through PPP projects.
    • Focus on mechanization and modernization of existing berths.
    • Explore new projects like Shalukkhali for liquid cargo handling.
  • Kolkata Dock System Development:
    • Develop an outer terminal to handle increased container traffic.
    • Reconstruct and mechanize berths 7 and 8 at Netaji Subhash Dock.
    • Increase container capacity from 0.65 million TEUs to 1 million TEUs.

These projects, undertaken through public-private partnerships, aim to improve the port’s efficiency, competitiveness, and overall cargo handling capacity.

Key Takeaways:

  • The focus on PPP models for infrastructure development is crucial for attracting private investment and accelerating project implementation.
  • The expansion of Haldia Dock Complex and the development of new terminals at Kolkata Dock System will significantly enhance the port’s capacity to handle various cargo types.
  • The modernization initiatives will improve operational efficiency and reduce turnaround time for vessels.
  • The focus on liquid cargo handling at Shalukkhali will further diversify the port’s cargo portfolio.

These developments are expected to strengthen Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port’s position as a key player in India’s maritime trade and contribute to the country’s economic growth.
