Technical trials of the country’s first Vande Bharat Freight EMU, a superfast parcel rake, commenced in the West Central Railway Kota Division on Wednesday, marking a significant step toward high-speed freight and cold-chain logistics in India.

What is being tested and where?

The 16-coach Vande Bharat platform-based Freight EMU prototype, developed by the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, is being tested under various speed and operating conditions on the Kota-Nagda-Sawai Madhopur rail section over nearly a month. WC Railway Kota Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Saurabh Jain said the Research Designs and Standards Organisation is conducting the trials on this corridor, one of Indian Railways’ most suitable high-speed test sections.

How did the rake perform on its first day of trials?

On the opening day, the rake departed Kota for Mahidpur Road at 6 am, running at a non-recorded speed of 120 km/h on the Kota-Mahidpur Road section, and at recorded speeds of 120 and 135 km/h on the Mahidpur Road-Bhawani Mandi stretch. During its return journey, the rake reached a maximum speed of 145 km/h, the highest recorded during the first day of testing.

What tests will be conducted over the coming weeks?

Over the course of the trials, engineers will run oscillation tests at speeds of 120, 130, 140 and 145 km/h in loaded and inflated conditions, along with emergency braking distance tests, coupler force trials, curve performance tests, traction and braking assessments, regenerative energy tests, and signal and telecom interference checks. A minimum of two round trips will be operated daily during the testing period.

What are the key specifications of the Freight EMU?

The rake comprises two DTC reefer vans, two non-driving trailer coaches and 12 parcel coaches, featuring Vande Bharat bogies, an axle load capacity of over 20 tonnes and total payload capacity exceeding 397 tonnes. It includes refrigerated parcel facilities, forced ventilation, pneumatic retractable roller flooring, advanced braking and propulsion systems, and Indian Railways’ automated anti-collision system, KAVACH. All doors automatically lock at speeds above 5 km/h, and the rake cannot operate unless all doors are closed.

What does this mean for India’s freight logistics sector?

Officials said the Vande Bharat Freight EMU technology is expected to give a new dimension to e-commerce, express parcels, cold-chain logistics and time-bound freight transport across the country, positioning Indian Railways to offer faster, more reliable high-value cargo movement alongside its passenger Vande Bharat network.
