Odessa Port

A merchant vessel with four Indian nationals onboard was struck at Ukraine’s Port of Odesa, with two crew members confirmed safe while search and rescue efforts continue for the remaining two, the Indian Embassy in Kyiv said.

What happened at Odesa port?

The incident occurred on Saturday, July 25, when MV AGN Ragnar was hit at the Port of Odesa, one of Ukraine’s key Black Sea ports that has repeatedly come under attack since the Russia-Ukraine conflict began in 2022. The Indian Embassy said it is closely monitoring developments following the strike.

What is the status of the Indian crew members?

According to the embassy, two of the four Indian nationals onboard have been confirmed safe, while information regarding the other two is still awaited. Search and rescue operations are currently underway, with the embassy stating it remains in constant contact with local authorities to ascertain the status of the missing crew members and extend all possible assistance.

What is known about the incident so far?

There is no immediate information on the source of the strike, the circumstances surrounding the incident, or the total crew strength of the vessel. The identities of the four Indian nationals and their specific duties onboard have also not been disclosed at this stage.

Why does Odesa remain a high-risk zone for shipping?

Odesa, Ukraine’s principal Black Sea port, has been a frequent target of missile and drone attacks since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. Merchant shipping through the Black Sea has been periodically disrupted despite ongoing efforts to keep maritime trade corridors functional amid the conflict.

What support is India providing to its nationals? India has consistently advised its citizens against travel to Ukraine given the security situation and has been extending consular assistance to Indian nationals in the country since the conflict began.
