V.O. Chidambaranar Port

V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority has become the first port in India to secure ISO 50001:2018 certification for its Energy Management System, awarded by the Indian Register Quality Systems, marking a defining moment in the country’s push toward sustainable port operations.

What is ISO 50001:2018 and why does it matter for ports?

ISO 50001:2018 is a globally recognised standard that sets out a structured framework for organisations to manage and improve energy performance systematically. For a port, this means establishing measurable processes to track how energy is consumed across cargo handling, lighting, cranes, pumping stations and administrative operations, then setting targets to reduce waste and inefficiency year on year. Unlike a one-time efficiency audit, the standard requires continual monitoring and improvement, making it a long-term commitment rather than a single achievement.

Why is VOC Port’s certification significant for India’s maritime sector?

VOC Port, located at Thoothukudi on Tamil Nadu’s southeastern coast, becoming the first Indian port to earn this certification places it ahead of every other major and non-major port in the country on formal energy governance. Port authorities across India handle enormous energy loads through container handling equipment, dry bulk conveyor systems, lighting networks and water pumping infrastructure, and inefficient energy use in these operations directly adds to both costs and emissions. By becoming the first certified port, VOC Port has effectively set the benchmark that other Indian ports are likely to be measured against as the sector moves toward greener operations.

How does this align with India’s port sustainability push?

The certification fits squarely into the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways’ broader Green Port initiatives, which encourage ports to adopt renewable energy, reduce emissions and modernise infrastructure in line with national energy conservation goals. As global shipping lines increasingly factor environmental performance into port selection, certifications like ISO 50001:2018 offer VOC Port a tangible credential to showcase to international customers and cargo owners who prioritise sustainability in their supply chain decisions.

What has driven VOC Port’s sustainability journey so far?

VOC Port has been steadily building its green credentials in recent years, with earlier steps including energy audits, LED lighting conversions, and exploration of solar power for port operations, groundwork that likely supported its readiness for a formal energy management certification. The port, which traces its origins to the early 20th century and has grown into one of India’s key gateways for dry bulk, liquid bulk, container and break bulk cargo, has increasingly positioned modernisation and sustainability as central to its long-term growth strategy alongside capacity expansion projects such as the mechanisation of North Cargo Berth-III.

What does this mean for the port’s future operations?

Port officials said the certification reflects a broader commitment to embedding sustainability into core operations rather than treating it as a standalone initiative. With energy management now formally certified, VOC Port is expected to continue refining its processes, potentially extending similar frameworks to water management, waste handling and carbon tracking as it works toward becoming a fully-fledged green port.

Why should the shipping industry take note of this milestone?

For shipping lines, exporters and importers routing cargo through VOC Port, the certification signals a port actively working to reduce its environmental footprint without compromising operational efficiency, a combination increasingly valued as global trade shifts toward low-carbon supply chains and ESG-linked port selection criteria.
