The Association of Container Train Operators has appointed Sanjiv Garg, an eminent senior logistics professional, as Senior Advisor to support and strengthen the container rail agenda in India.

What is Garg’s background in Indian Railways?

Garg retired from the Government of India as Additional Member, Railway Board, following a long and distinguished career in the Indian Railways. A member of the Indian Railway Traffic Service, he has held several key positions spanning railway operations and commercial functions. He has also served as Managing Director of Pipavav Railway Corporation Limited, bringing extensive experience in container rail operations, logistics and multimodal transportation.

What roles does Garg currently hold?

Garg currently serves as Secretary General of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport India. He is also a nominee and independent director on the boards of Gujarat Pipavav Port Ltd and CJ Darcl Logistics. In addition, he serves as an Assessor and Mentor with the Capacity Building Commission, Government of India, supporting the National Standards for Civil Service Training Institutions.

What does ACTO expect from this appointment?

ACTO said Garg’s extensive experience in railway operations, logistics, commercial management and multimodal transportation will provide valuable strategic guidance to the organisation, drawing on decades of hands-on expertise across both public sector rail administration and private container logistics operations.

What does this mean for India’s container rail sector?

Garg’s appointment is expected to contribute significantly to ACTO’s efforts to build a stronger, more efficient and competitive container rail logistics sector, while supporting improved rail-based cargo movement and strengthening India’s broader multimodal logistics ecosystem.
