Adani Eyes UK’s Biggest Port Operator Associated British Ports

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone is evaluating a potential bid for Associated British Ports, the United Kingdom’s largest port operator, as the Gautam Adani-led group looks to expand its international footprint, according to people familiar with the development.

What did APSEZ say about the reported bid?

Responding to queries, an APSEZ spokesperson said the company does not comment on market speculation or rumours as a matter of policy but continuously evaluates opportunities that align with its long-term strategy and create sustainable value for stakeholders.

Why is Associated British Ports strategically significant?

ABP owns and operates 21 ports across England, Scotland and Wales, including those in Southampton and the Humber, and handles around a quarter of the UK’s seaborne trade, making it one of the country’s most critical transport infrastructure networks.

Who currently owns Associated British Ports?

Canadian pension funds CPP Investments and the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System together own around 64 percent of ABP. A transaction for the stake could value the company at more than £10 billion. OMERS declined to comment on queries, while emails sent to CPP Investments and Associated British Ports had not drawn a response at the time of publication.

Who else has shown interest in the asset?

A Bloomberg report in April said the proposed sale had attracted preliminary interest from several global infrastructure investors and port operators, reflecting the strategic value placed on the UK’s largest port network by major international players competing for a foothold in European port infrastructure.

What would this mean for APSEZ’s global ambitions?

A successful bid would mark a significant step in APSEZ’s international expansion strategy, extending the Adani Group’s ports and logistics footprint beyond India and its existing overseas assets in Israel, Sri Lanka, Tanzania and Australia, as the company continues to position itself as a growing global transport utility.
