China has delivered its first domestically built pure-electric inland container vessel for export, marking a milestone in the country’s green shipbuilding push. The 182-TEU vessel arrived at Rugao Port in Nantong, Jiangsu province, on Tuesday for final testing ahead of its departure to Vietnam.

Who built China’s first pure-electric export container vessel?

The vessel was constructed by Shandong New Energy Shipbuilding Co for global shipping major CMA CGM. It represents the company’s first export order for a domestically built, fully electric container ship designed for inland waterway operations.

What are the specifications of the pure-electric container vessel?

The ship has a capacity of 182 twenty-foot equivalent units and runs on a battery-powered propulsion system, enabling zero-emission operations. Its design is tailored specifically for inland container transport, offering a quieter and cleaner alternative to conventionally fuelled vessels.

Where will the vessel be deployed?

Once delivered, the vessel will operate on a fixed liner route between Binh Duong Province and Cai Mep port in Vietnam. It is set to replace fuel-powered ships currently serving the route, offering full-cycle green shipping services for CMA CGM’s inland logistics network.

Why does this delivery matter for green shipping?

The vessel’s export to Vietnam signals growing international demand for zero-emission inland shipping solutions and reflects China’s expanding capabilities in electric vessel manufacturing, as shipping lines worldwide look to decarbonise inland and coastal cargo movement.
