China’s shipbuilding industry recorded sharp growth across key indicators in the first half of 2026, reinforcing its dominant position in the global market, according to data released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

How much did China’s shipbuilding output grow in 2026?

Shipbuilding output touched 36.5 million deadweight tonnes, rising 51.2 percent year on year and accounting for 62.2 percent of global capacity. New orders climbed 173.1 percent to reach 121.06 million DWT, giving China an 82.3 percent share of global orders. Orders on hand stood at 363.25 million DWT by June end, up 54.9 percent, representing 71.2 percent of the world total.

Which vessel segments are driving China’s shipbuilding dominance?

Chinese yards now hold over 80 percent market share in dry bulk carriers, container ships and crude tankers. Industry voices noted that disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz and tightening crude supply pushed up tanker demand, which Chinese shipbuilders were able to capture quickly due to scale and cost advantages.

Notable deliveries included the world’s first 41,800 tonne bidirectional self-discharging vessel, bound for West Africa’s Simandou Iron Ore Project, and a 10,000 vehicle capacity car carrier fitted with solar power generation, delivered to a South Korean buyer.

What does this mean for global shipbuilding trade?

Export value from Chinese shipbuilding reached USD 31.62 billion in H1 2026, with overseas orders making up over 90 percent of new contracts, even as US lawmakers explore measures to counter China’s shipbuilding rise.
