Cochin Shipyard Limited launched Machilipatnam, the seventh of eight Mahe-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft being built for the Indian Navy, marking another milestone in the country’s indigenous defence shipbuilding programme.

Who launched the vessel and who attended the ceremony?

The ship, designated BY 529, was launched by Goolrukh Anand in the presence of Vice Admiral Atul Anand, Additional Secretary at the Department of Military Affairs, who served as chief guest. Cochin Shipyard Chairman and Managing Director Jose VJ, along with Director (Operations) Harikrishnan S and Director (Technical) Rajesh Gopalakrishnan, senior officials of the Southern Naval Command and Indian Navy Headquarters, and representatives of the classification society attended the ceremony.

What capabilities does the vessel offer?

Machilipatnam is equipped for underwater surveillance, anti-submarine warfare operations, low-intensity maritime operations and mine warfare missions. The Ministry of Defence said the vessel will strengthen coastal defence and enhance maritime domain awareness, with the Mahe-class fleet expected to significantly improve the Navy’s operational readiness in the Indian Ocean Region.

What is the significance of the ship’s name?

The vessel is named after the historic port city of Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh’s Krishna district, honouring the city’s rich maritime legacy and its longstanding role as a trading hub along India’s eastern coast.

How does this reflect India’s indigenous defence manufacturing push?

With indigenous content exceeding 80 percent, the project underscores the growing capability of India’s shipbuilding industry and reflects the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative in defence manufacturing. The launch follows the commissioning of INS Malvan, the second Mahe-class vessel, earlier this month.

What does this mean for the broader ASW SWC programme?

The launch of Machilipatnam marks continued progress on the eight-vessel ASW SWC project being executed by Cochin Shipyard for the Indian Navy, reflecting close collaboration between the shipyard and the Navy in strengthening India’s coastal defence and maritime security capabilities.
