Tata Power to Begin Work on Rs 6,600-Crore Odisha Wafer Plant in October, Eyes Nuclear Power Entry

Tata Power will begin construction of its Rs 6,600-crore, 10-GW photovoltaic wafer and ingot manufacturing facility in Odisha from October this year, while simultaneously advancing plans to enter the nuclear power sector by shortlisting sites across three states, top management said.

Why did Tata Power choose Odisha for its wafer plant?

The facility will be set up at Gopalpur, Odisha, with Tata Power opting for the eastern state over Andhra Pradesh after evaluating incentives and infrastructure support. Managing Director and CEO Praveer Sinha said the project benefited from ready land availability at Gopalpur, where Tata Steel is developing a special economic zone, allowing the company to move ahead quickly since the land had already been acquired.

What is the current status of preparatory work?

Sinha said the company has secured land along with various preliminary approvals, including environmental clearances and water permissions, with construction expected to begin by October. The project marks Tata Power’s backward integration into the solar manufacturing value chain, complementing its existing 4.3-GW cell and module plant, which Sinha said is operating at full capacity and is not being expanded.

What is the project timeline and investment structure?

The greenfield facility will be implemented in two phases of 5 GW each, at a total investment of approximately Rs 6,600 crore. The first phase is targeted for commissioning in January 2028, with the second phase following around six months later.

What are Tata Power’s nuclear power plans?

Alongside the solar wafer project, Tata Power is exploring entry into nuclear power generation, having shortlisted potential project sites across three states as part of its broader energy diversification strategy.

How did Tata Power perform financially in the latest quarter?

Tata Power reported an 11 percent rise in consolidated net profit for the first quarter of FY27, reaching Rs 1,401 crore compared to Rs 1,262 crore a year earlier. Revenue from operations grew 5.6 percent to Rs 19,051.26 crore from Rs 18,035.07 crore in the corresponding period last year.
